CCGSD Presents « Past the Ballot Box: Protecting trans kids all year long », a fireside chat featuring Lyra Evans and Teri Westerby

The Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity (CCGSD) invites you to join a virtual fireside chat on November 18, 2022 from 5:30-7:00 PM to mark Trans Awareness Week.

Recent municipal elections across Canada marked some important victories for transgender students and their allies, including the (re) election of openly trans school board trustees in both BC and Ontario. However, they also showed a remarkable level of organization and coordination among anti-trans groups across the country, who are specifically focused on school boards as an area they believe they can make inroads.

Given that this organization will not stop simply because elections are over, it is crucial for educators, policymakers, and other supporters of trans youth to continue to work to make schools a place where transgender, nonbinary, and gender-non-conforming learners can feel safe and supported, and to monitor and counteract the continued anti-trans rhetoric used by organizations like the Campaign Life Coalition.

This Fireside Chat will bring together Lyra Evans and Teri Westerby, transgender elected officials advocating to make schools safer for trans youth. In conversation with Jack Saddleback, Lyra and Jack will discuss what they see as next steps for trans learners at school board tables across the country – and how policymakers, educators, and the general public can support them.
