Use the Right Words: Guidelines for Reporting on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in Canada

Mainstream media holds the power to shape narratives about sexual and gender-based violence. In 2015, femifesto released Use the Right Words: Media Reporting on Sexual Violence in Canada which was instrumental in helping media, both nationally and internationally, navigate the challenging task of reporting on sexual violence. However, the landscape has since shifted, and there is still much work to be done. Over the last three years, femifesto worked with Possibility Seeds to update the Use the Right Words guide and create an expanded suite of accompanying guides. Intended for journalists, communications professionals, and media professionals, it includes in-depth guidance around frameworks, language, and imagery. This will help readers discuss and report on different forms of sexual and gender-based violence in a trauma-informed way that prevents additional harm.

Join Possibility Seeds’ Farrah Khan and Aubrianna Snow in conversation with journalists and media professionals, Alyshah Hasham, Robyn Doolittle and Shannon Giannitsopoulou, to launch this exciting resource and reshape how we talk about, and report on, sexual and gender-based violence.
