Next Gen Men Circle talks Masculinity & Pride

Join us at the next NGM Circle event, where we’ll dive into the relationship between masculinity & pride!

NGM Circle events are conversations about the things that matter to us — gender equity, inclusion, mental wellness, healthy relationships, and social justice. Our focus is typically on how men and masculinity fit into the feminist movement, but folks of all genders & backgrounds are welcome to attend.

Description: How does our culture define what it is to “be a man”? What messages do we get about pride? How do these messages interact? Where does pride fit into our lives as men?

Growing up, what are boys told they can or should be proud of? Maybe it’s their accomplishments — something they’ve worked toward, like getting a high grade on a test. Or maybe it’s identity-based, like pride in their cultural heritage.

We’re curious, what were we encouraged or allowed to feel proud about? Was our pride in ourselves connected to how well we could fit into stereotypical ideas about what it means to “be a man? » And on the flip side, if we couldn’t perform masculinity the “right” way, were we expected to feel shame?

You may have heard the expression, “Pride comes before the fall”, or even that pride is considered a deadly sin, but we want to consider all sides to pride. When is pride helpful to an individual or a group? When can pride harm us? When can pride harm others?

What do we want the relationship between our masculinity and pride to be? What would a healthy relationship with pride look like? Is there a balance to be found?

We’ve got a lot of questions to dig into, so join us on June 1st at 6:00 pm at the Dorset Pub for another great conversation!

Hope to see you there!
