Understanding Anti-Black Racism and Black Wellness
In this session, participants will critically examine the impact of anti-Black racism on black health and wellness and how to disrupt the systemic barriers that continue to create inequities among Black Canadians.
Cynthia Okafor is a proud Calgarian, born and raised and is also the daughter of first-generation Nigerian immigrants. She is a registered social worker and has almost 20 years of experience working in the social services sector. Cynthia has had a truly fulfilling career and has worked in a variety of settings including settlement and integration, community development, social planning, and Equity, Diversity & Inclusion. She holds a Bachelor of Social Work (B.S.W.) degree from the University of Calgary, and a Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) degree from Carleton University.
Cynthia is passionate about racial equity and social justice and works tirelessly to create an environment that acknowledges, embraces, and values differences. She believes that true change happens when individuals are given the opportunity to engage in real, raw, and authentic conversations about race and racism, and actively work towards removing barriers at the systemic and institutional level.
